Các nhà nghiên cứu tình báo mạng nhận định rằng một chiến dịch mở rộng ảnh hưởng thân Bắc Kinh đã tìm cách gieo rắc sự chia rẽ xung quanh đại dịch virus Trung Cộng và kích động các cuộc biểu tình trên đường phố ở Hoa Kỳ.
Theo một báo cáo hôm 08/09 từ công ty bảo mật Mandiant Threat Intelligence của Hoa Kỳ, mạng lưới này bắt đầu hoạt động vào năm 2019, ban đầu tập trung vào việc làm mất uy tín các cuộc biểu tình ủng hộ dân chủ ở Hồng Kông. Kể từ đó, hoạt động [của nhóm này] đã mở rộng về quy mô và phạm vi, trải dài trên 30 nền tảng truyền thông xã hội cùng 40 trang web và diễn đàn trực tuyến khác bằng bảy ngôn ngữ.
Ngoài việc lặp lại các tuyên bố từ truyền thông nhà nước Trung Quốc, nhóm này cũng đã tích cực cố gắng kêu gọi người Mỹ tham gia các cuộc biểu tình phản đối thái độ bài xích người Á Châu, điều dường như cho thấy tham vọng thôn tính ngày càng tăng của các đặc vụ Trung Cộng đối với một tầm ảnh hưởng trực tiếp hơn đến các hoạt động trong thế giới thực trước sự chứng kiến của người dân toàn cầu.
Hồi tháng 04/2021, hàng ngàn bài đăng kêu gọi người Mỹ gốc Á biểu tình phản đối “sự bất công về chủng tộc” đã xuất hiện. Một số bài đăng — được viết bằng nhiều ngôn ngữ trong đó có Hàn ngữ, Nhật ngữ, và Anh ngữ — đặc biệt nhắm đến doanh nhân lưu vong Quách Văn Quý (Guo Wengui), hướng mọi người đến một địa chỉ được cho là nơi ở của ông Quách tại New York để chống lại các giả thuyết về nguồn gốc virus do ông Quách quảng bá, nhất là giả thuyết cho rằng virus là một loại vũ khí sinh học do Trung Cộng chế tạo.
Thời điểm những lời kêu gọi này [xuất hiện] trùng khớp với một loạt các báo cáo về tội ác thù hận chống lại người gốc Á, điều mà truyền thông nhà nước Trung Quốc cũng đã biến thành một công cụ tuyên truyền nhằm bài bác những chỉ trích của Hoa Kỳ.
Các nhà nghiên cứu viết rằng, mặc dù không có bằng chứng nào cho thấy những cố gắng như vậy đã thành công, nhưng đó là một “lời cảnh báo sớm rằng các tác nhân đằng sau hoạt động này có thể đang bắt đầu thăm dò, tuy là bằng một phương thức hữu hạn, về các cách gây ảnh hưởng trực tiếp hơn đến các vấn đề nội bộ của Hoa Kỳ.”
Công ty Mandiant không có bằng chứng về sự can dự của các tổ chức do Bắc Kinh kiểm soát, và các tài khoản thân Bắc Kinh cho đến nay đã thu hút được rất ít sự chú ý trên các phương tiện truyền thông xã hội lớn hoặc các nền tảng riêng.

Hồi tháng 06/2020, Twitter đã xóa bỏ hơn 170,000 tài khoản do Bắc Kinh hậu thuẫn nhằm thổi phồng các câu chuyện gây hiểu lầm có lợi cho Trung Cộng, trong đó có tuyên truyền ca ngợi phản ứng đại dịch của Bắc Kinh và chống Hoa Kỳ.
Với số lượng tăng lên theo cấp số nhân kể từ năm 2019, các tài khoản giả mạo này cũng giúp phát tán luận điệu từ các tài khoản ngoại giao Trung Quốc. Các nhà nghiên cứu cho biết “gần một nửa số lượt tweet lại của các tài khoản của PRC [Cộng hòa Nhân dân Trung Hoa] bắt nguồn từ 1% các tài khoản siêu lan truyền thông tin hàng đầu,” theo báo cáo được công bố hồi tháng 05/2021.
Ông Huntley lưu ý trên Twitter rằng các bài đăng đôi khi có những lỗi “khá buồn cười,” chẳng hạn như gọi “virus corona chủng mới” là “virus vương miện mới,” mặc dù ông nhận thấy nhóm này đã cải thiện chất lượng sản xuất của mình, thử nghiệm với các video có độ phân giải cao hơn và phụ đề tốt hơn.
Các nhà nghiên cứu cũng đã xác định những điều tương tự tái diễn trong các bài đăng bằng các ngôn ngữ khác, có thể do chúng được những người không phải là dân bản ngữ viết hoặc là bản dịch tự động.
