Tờ Hoàn Cầu Thời báo (Global Times) cơ quan ngôn luận của ĐCSTQ trong bài xã luận hôm 17/8 doạ dẫm rằng nếu lính Mỹ thực sự hiện diện ở Đài Loan, điều này tương đương với việc Washington tuyên chiến với Bắc Kinh, và Trung Quốc sẽ dùng vũ lực nghiền nát.
Đây là phản ứng gay gắt từ tờ báo được xem là lá cải của Trung Quốc dành cho một dòng thông báo của Thượng nghị sĩ Mỹ John Cornyn cùng ngày.
Trước đó, trên mạng xã hội Twitter, ông Cornyn liệt kê một danh sách các quốc gia/vùng lãnh thổ kèm theo số lượng lính Mỹ đồn trú.
Theo số liệu mà thượng nghị sĩ bang Texas này đưa ra, hiện Mỹ có 28.000 lính đóng quân ở Hàn Quốc, 35.486 lính ở Đức… và ở Đài Loan là 30.000.
